Contra Costa Kops For Kids Programs

Current Programs
Kops For Kids Youth Mentoring Program

We issue grants of up to $250 for a single
child and up to $1,000 for a team of four
or more, to active or retired law enforcement
officers who are volunteering to mentor at-risk
youth in Contra Costa County. The funds are
used to pay the activity fees for the youngsters.
Grant applications are received until 28 February,
for funding 1 July.

We budget $20,000 a year for these grants. They
include fishing programs, violin lessons, leadership
conferences, sports equipment, scouting programs,
golf lessons, and many other activities for more
than 2,000 youth each year.

Positive Mental Attitudes (PMA)

Contra Costa Kops For Kids offers this free presentation,
using a PowerPoint presentation, video, and music,
in fifty-minutes. A discussion on depression and
the need to seek medical assistance is included.
The seminar is designed for high school age young people,
but has been presented to middle and elementary students
also.

Sports Clinics are then available for students to
practice their positive mental attitudes. We sometimes
provide sports equipment to schools that want to
continue this program on their own.

Call (925)827-1998 to schedule your school.

We have supported the Special Olympics for more
than fifteen years. We've been involved with the
Law Enforcement Torch Run, Adopt an Athlete, and
other activities of the Special Olympics.

We sponsor BORP(Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program),
headquartered in Berkeley, on a regular basis. They provide
wheelchair sports for youth in Contra Costa County. During
2000 we helped them host the National Junior Wheelchair Basketball
Tournament and were the team sponsor for our local
team "The Bay Cruisers". Over half of the team
consisted of Contra Costa County Youngsters.

We also provide volunteer outriders for their
annual "Revolution in the Vineyard" in the fall each
year. Disabled youth ride hand crank bicycles in
the wine country. Distances are 10,25, 50,
75, and 100 miles. Then, there's a great lunch,
massages, entertainment, and just a great day in the
outdoors.

Opening Day activities in September include
wheelchair basketball and goal ball (a sport for
the vision impaired. Everyone is blindfolded,
but the ball has a bell in it. Players must use
their auditory senses to play this game).

They also play power soccer for people in
power wheelchairs. Anybody in a regular wheelchair
is not going to win head to head with someone
in a power wheelchair!

Violence Prevention Coalition-Contra Costa Kops For Kids
is one of many organizations and individuals
working with the Violence Prevention
Coalition of Contra Costa County to present
semi-annual forums and educational programs
on preventing violence.

We are also a member of the DELTA Project Sub-committee,
working on programs for men and boys that prevent
violence against women.
